(Accidentally queued this post for today instead of yesterday, so Day 71 it is.)
It’s Arts & Crafts day!
Today’s Activity: Assemble a cool papercraft optical illusion.
The “inverted face” optical illusion, invented by Jerry Andrus, results in a creature who, despite being made of nothing but paper, seems to have a gaze that follows your movements. It works because your brain wants to assume the face is the right way round, and that makes it look like it’s moving when your view shifts. Slate has more info on how this mind-bending trick works.
It’s really worth experiencing firsthand, so make your own! There doesn’t seem to be a working link to the original dog design these days, but you can download and color your own cute monkey version here. Print it, cut it out and fold it up, then close one eye and look at your creation (recording a video works well too). When you move your head, it will appear to follow you.
