Day 61: History has its ups and downs
It’s Adventure Day!
Today’s Activity: Research the history of your neighborhood.
Was recently astounded to learn that north Seattle was once home to a DRIVE-YOUR-OWN-CAR ROLLER COASTER. There’s even footage:
What can you learn about where you live? Check your city, county or state’s websites for property records, old maps, pictures of properties or even old aerial survey photos. Did your street used to have a streetcar? Was your land once a farm or a forest? Who used to live there?
Be aware, though, that what you find may not all be fun and games (or roller coasters). You might uncover a history of redlining and segregation. But learning your city’s history is one of the best ways to begin working toward building a fairer future for everyone.
