Writing Prompt: What is your personal meme?
Everyone has that thing that sticks in their head. Maybe it’s a phrase or an image. It isn’t deep or impactful, but for some reason you think about it often, maybe for years. And while some memes achieve wide cultural recognition, this one is all yours.
The Cut has an entire series, I Think About This A Lot, that explores this phenomenon.
Here’s mine: the narrowbrag. When I was in college, we used to go to this Mexican restaurant that had a big banner outside advertising “1 of the six best…Margaritas in Manhattan.” The internet tells me they’ve closed (say it ain’t so), but the banner is still visible on Google Street View:
It’s just so oddly specific that you automatically assume they were #6 (and what is that ellipsis omitting?). You end up dismissing an actually-pretty-good-if-true promise. It’s been years, but anytime I see someone make a too-precise statement that calls their claim into question, I think of those sixth-best margaritas.
